We were saddened to learn of the passing on Aug. 24 of Dr. Ovid Young – a multitalented artist, educator, composer and inspiration to countless other musicians. He was 74.

He was in the vanguard of those who championed musical excellence using the modern organ, selecting Rodgers organs for many recitals and other projects during his long career. He was also an accomplished pianist who performed as part of the popular duo Nielson & Young . For many years, he was listed as both a Rodgers and Steinway artist.

A longtime instructor at Olivet Nazarene University in Bourbonnais, Illinois, he was Artist-in-Residence at Olivet’s School of Music until the end of his life. Dr Young led the committee that chose the 4-manual Ruffatti pipe organ for the University that was completed in 2011. “The University, and our community at large, has lost a great man,” said Dr. John C. Bowling, University president. “Although he will be greatly missed, his legacy will live on, and his music will be performed for generations to come.”
